Earlier this May, students Waseem Tahoun and Michael Qassis had the opportunity to represent Dar al-Kalima University with their professor Rose Kando at an International Folk School’s Camp and Festival in Kolding, Denmark. Creative young adults from over 20 different schools across the globe gathered together to bond and learn about one another’s cultural practices. Hiking, singing, cooking, gardening, and canoeing workshops created strong bonds between the participants while offering first-hand, engaging, cross-cultural education.

In order to best share the culture of Palestine, Waseem and Michael chose to recreate a traditional tent as well as a Palestinian DJ set with dabke. They displayed the koofiyeh, Palestinian flags, and even taught the others some Arabic words. Waseem and Michael both expressed how beneficial the week-long gathering was for them, not only regarding the international cultural education but the relationships with other participants that they hope to continue fostering. Dar al-Kalima University is proud of its students’ efforts and celebrates the generative cross-cultural exchanges.
